Milestone & cake smash photo sessions are a blast! It’s truly an honor each time a family trusts me to capture a chapter of their loved ones’ childhood. If you’re considering a milestone or cake smash session, then you’ve come to the right place. I’m breaking down some Cake Smash FAQ. But first.. a quick recap of my most recent milestone session while it’s fresh in my mind…

Last weekend we got lucky between rain storms and got to hold a milestone session at Goodstay Gardens in Wilmington, DE. It started with big sis hopping out of the car, ready and eager for pictures. She was adorable, had the best little outgoing personality, and when she gave me a hug within 2 minutes of meeting me, my heart melted. Our session concluded with her grabbing my hand and walking me to the parking lot. Again… heart melted!! What a sweetie!

The birthday boy was equally adorable! He was a busy little guy, wanting to be on the move and explore (which meant cute candids and action shots!). He also had the best, cheeky grin. The kind that lights up your whole face (proof in the gallery below!)

My favorite part of the session might have been his reaction to his cake. It’s always fun to see how babes react! This little one was all business and wasted zero time… fingertips had icing on them before mom even finished putting the cake down. 

Milestone & Cake Smash Photo Session FAQs

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CAKE SMASH SESSION & A MILESTONE SESSION?

Milestone sessions are family focused. 

The bulk of your session will be spent focusing on capturing your connections and bond. The sweet details of your current season of life! We’ll get group shots, sibling shots, shots with each parent, and individuals of each kiddo. If possible, we’ll even get some solo shots of parents too. 

Some families like to end it at that. Others like to end with a cake smash! If that’s you, we’ll take a quick break to shift gears. I’ll take care of any set-up, and you’ll take care of prepping the birthday babe (including any outfit change you may want). Then let the cake smashing fun begin!

Cake smash sessions are quicker and focused on the cake exploration! 

During these sessions I prioritize individual shots of your child, detail shots of the cake, and of course your child’s experience from the first taste to the last handful! 

If you don’t want to be in front of the camera yourself, a cake smash session is probably the best fit. However, I recommend the milestone sessions so that you get the best of both worlds! You may not love being in front of the camera, but decades from now your child will likely cherish those moments of connection you made the time to document. 

WHERE DO CAKE SMASH SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?

As a natural light photographer, I love shooting outside! We’ll find a beautiful location that your family can enjoy. I prioritize your preference in location, but have plenty of spots to recommend when helpful.

While I do typically shoot outdoors,  studio sessions are available when requested. Studio rental would add an additional $75 – $100 to your session fee. My favorite local studio is Petit Social in Delaware City!

WHAT TYPES OF PROPS OR THEMES DO YOU OFFER?

While adorable, studio backdrops and elaborate props are not my style or niche. If you’re looking for that type of studio vibe, I’m not your best fit. There are so many great photographers out there who specialize in that niche, so I like to differentiate that up front so that you are matched well with your vision.

I AM a good fit if you’re looking for a cake smash session that is designed to feel laidback and natural! My sessions have a simple set-up. I offer blankets, a cake stand, and tee-pee. 

With that being said, I want your session to be special and meaningful to your family! If there are specific props you’d like to bring to memorialize your little one’s birthday, let’s do it! I’m here to be your wing woman, so I offer consultation at no extra cost. I can help you coordinate what will photograph beautifully and how we can best set it up. 

DO YOU PROVIDE THE SMASH CAKE?

As a new member of the food allergy mom club, I am terrified of providing a cake that would not sit well with a little one’s tummy. Therefore I do not provide the smash cake. What I do provide is consultation for cake design when wanted! We’ll make sure your cake photographs well and looks perfect with your little one’s outfit. 

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

I’ll bring the cake stand, blankets, and tee pee if you want them! I also always bring supplies to help with cake clean-up so that you have one less thing to worry about (trash bag and paper towels). 

You should bring:

-The cake or cupcake

-Wipes

-Personalization: any specific props or decor you’d like to incorporate

-Personalization: any specific sentimental items you want to remember. For example – if there is a well loved stuffy or lovey that is important to your child

-Water, especially if it’s warm outside!
